Kommentar/Beschreibung

The seminar will focus on the early history of an emerging Islamic culture in the context of a late Antique world during the 6th to 10th century where many other religions and their architecture, e. g . Buddhism and Christianity, already existed. Early Islamic architecture is basically a reception of the Roman and Greek style in architecture, enriched with design formula provided by Early Christian architecture.
Intercultural discussions during the formative stage will be treated extensively, e. g. the debate about the value of the image during the 8th and 9th century .
Apart from that a general history, not only of architecture and design in the lands of Islam will be given, focussing on Turkey, Spain, North Africa, Egypt, Irak, Persia and India. Other subjects may be British Colonial architecture in Egypt and India, Anti-Colonial movements in Egyptian architecture or the architecture in the lands of Islam today.
Students are expected to choose a topic for individual research and to contribute a paper to seminar discussions (3 ECTS). The delivery of a written version of this paper is also possible (6 ECTS)
